Situated on the tip of Taveuni on its breathtaking shoreline is MATEI POINTE. Kelly and Scott Schulman, residents of Chico, California, fell so deeply in love with the people and beauty of the island upon their first trip that they purchased Matei Pointe. As the Schulman’s experience their dream come true, now they want to share their dream with you.
Kelly and Scott’s piece of paradise has a 300-degree view, with private beaches on the east side for inspiring sunrises topped off with dramatic sunsets over the west beach.
During your stay, you will be well cared for by Pita and his wife Lo. They are on the grounds daily to take care of Matei Pointe, but first and foremost, to tend to your needs. Pita and Lo epitomize the friendly, simple and loving Fijian style and unsurpassed hospitality. They will be thrilled to share their paradise and traditions with you. They will ensure that your needs for anything from grocery shopping, massage therapy, fishing excursions, local knowledge exchanges, laundry service or even just a song performed by Pita (he is an accomplished musician) is handled. Pita and Lo are to Matei Pointe as the sun is to our fruits and flowers. Please don’t try to take them home with you. They are essential to Matei Pointe, as you will soon discover.
Location
Matei Pointe is the very north-eastern tip of the island of Taveuni (Fiji’s 3rd largest island and referred to as the ’Garden Island’).
Two local domestic airlines can transport you to Taveuni from Nadi (Nandi) International Airport, on one of the most beautiful flights imaginable. In just under 90 minutes from Nadi (an hour from Suva) you’ll fly over countless islands that comprise Fiji. You will be whisked over coral reefs, stunning white beaches and lush tropical rainforests. There are at least 4 flights daily to Taveuni. For low,low consolidated air fares from the States call us, we might save you hundreds!!
Taveuni can also be reached by boat if you choose to take a more leisurely route.
MATEI POINTE is only minutes from the Taveuni airport where Pita and Lo will happily meet you.
Accommodation
A grand, main house coupled with three cozy, self-contained, bures (cottages) outline the tip of Taveuni in the town of Matei. The 4 traditional structures are private, quiet and a good distance from each other. They all share the outrageous views of the beautiful Somosomo Strait, peaceful tranquility and the unmatched hospitality of Pita and Lo.
The main house has 2large bedrooms,1 small two full baths. For the nature lovers that frequent Matei Pointe, one bath has an all- stone, private outdoor shower. A full kitchen (Scott owns restaurants) beckons the cook. The huge living room opens to 2000 sq. ft. of decks wrapped around the perimeter of the home. Louvered floor to ceiling windows let the tropical breezes flow through while keeping you cool along with the many ceiling fans. The decor is colorful, traditional, classy and fully renovated in 2003. Large Fijian rugs adorn the tiled floors. Electricity is 24 hours with both 240v and 110v available. The newest of the beachfront bungalows, the SUNSET BURE, sits directly over the western beach. Built in 2000, the Sunset Bure is spacious, comfortable, equipped with a kitchenette and large, inviting deck. Guests spend countless hours nestled in the outdoor, built-in sofa strategically situated on the deck for awe-inspiring views overlooking the crystal clear straits. The bure is as comfortable inside as outside. Next to the Sunset Bure is one of Taveuni’s greatest fruit trees. There are thousands of mouth-watering mangos hanging from this 75ft. by 60ft. tree. Enjoy avocados the size of footballs and succulent papayas once you’ve had your fill of the mangos!
The SOMOSOMO BURES are a littlr more rustic, exceptionally large with full kitchens and a wonderful deck. The Somosomo Bures have queen size beds, full kitchen, living area and large porch perfectly suited for sunrise, sunset and moonscape viewing. Attractive rental rates will remain in place until full modernization plans are complete.
Dining & Entertainment
Quality and flavorful meats and poultry accompany the local fresh fish. Nothing beats walking out your door and picking mangos, papayas, bananas, and avocados when in season. Take a short stroll to a beautiful little restaurant down the beach to enjoy fine food, imported beers and wines. Here you will enjoy an incredible view of the ocean while immediately being treated like family. Menu selections all at a reasonable tariff.
Activities
Swing in a hammock, cruise in the resort’s kayak, sit under the mango tree, kickback listening to Pitas’ music or all of the above. Swim to another island, watch the colorful fish, or catch a few for dinner in the main house. Taveuni is magic and Matei Pointe puts you at the tip of it all. You’ll fall in love with it just as Kelly and Scott did.
Scuba diving off Taveuni is considered to be one of the top 5 sites in the world. Labeled as the Soft Coral Capital of the World by Jean-Michel Cousteau, it offers a comprehensive range of dive locations. Spectacular hard and soft corals, caves and grottoes, amazingly diverse marine life in a spectrum of hues and sizes, and internationally certified dive operators all ensure your dive experience will be a memorable one.
